Situated at Gansbaai – the shark cage diving capital of the world – about 2 hour’s drive from Cape Town. Our volunteer programs offer a limited number of places each year which allows participants to gain the maximum from their time working closely with biologists from our research team and on our daily shark cage diving vessel.
Access to multiple marine species in a relatively small area of sea Shark sightings all year peaking in the Southern Hemisphere in winter (May – September). Southern Right Whales including calves arrive in July and leave in December for Antarctica. Other species including seals and penguins are resident all year and we sometimes have dolphins sightings.
You will learn about the behaviors and biology of Great White Sharks and the other species in our seas. Marine biologists will be there to help, support and encourage you to get the most benefit out of your stay.
Join the permanent team of full-time marine biologists studying the Great White Shark and other marine species in cooperation with universities and academic institutions worldwide. Every volunteer becomes completely involved in our eco-tourism (cage diving) and conservation work throughout their stay. Access to research facilities and lectures by our own visiting speakers as well as visits to local marine organizations (Two Oceans Aquarium).
Everyone spends the majority of time at sea aboard Slashfin – our cage diving boat – or our newly commissioned research boat Lwazi (“seeking knowledge”).
Based on feedback from our volunteers from all over the world we have developed an educational and research program which gives you many opportunities. That’s why so many former volunteers return for further visits.
